The first floor renovations on our house are nearly done! We’ve almost finished the minimum needed in order to meet our goal – host Thanksgiving. We’ll still have a bit of work to do on the front section of the first floor, but that’s functional-enough and not really necessary at the moment. I doubt we’ll have time to move forward with that remaining portion – and if we did, it’d just be opening a big can of worms (re: would make a big mess).

Once that’s all done, we’re going to finish scrubbing the house down – it’s collected a TON of dust and dirt and clutter from the nearly-6-month-long renovation project. And then – BAKING! My favorite part.

Once we make it through the weekend, I want to focus on finishing up that front portion of the first floor. Why? Because that’s where my drawing desk (I call that section, “my studio”) is located, and I’m just itching to be able to put it to use! Do I smell a New Year’s resolution?

We’ll see.

Anyway. I’m going to go through the probably-hundreds of photos that I’ve collected from the renovation so far and post some before-during-after photos on the house blog. Keep an eye open for those! What a difference… It’s a whole new house!

I’m going to try to start blogging more often. It won’t be every day, but definitely more frequently than once every six months.

I stopped for a while because Twitter was covering my micro-blogging needs and I wasn’t up for writing long posts. But I’ve started accumulating a number of How-Tos that I want to finish writing up. I also think it’ll be a nice distraction from working and planning the wedding.

I’m still slowly working on fixing the remaining bugs on the site. I’ve made some progress over the past few weeks, but there are still a few out there – like the pagination. I’m still really eager to theme the forum too. I’m hoping that DreamWeaver CS5 helps remove any excuses that I have for procrastinating, because it REALLy does make working with CMSes and forums a lot faster and easier.

Keep checking back!

So if our breathing wasn’t bad enough with our recent sinus infections / head colds – whatever you want to call them, we decided to tear down a wall.

We moved everything into the guest room – and I have to admit that after living in the master bedroom that was without wallpaper, primer, or paint (a nice WWII theme), that it was nice to stay in a room (albeit smaller) that had paint on the walls and curtains.

We started demo on Friday – removing the plaster from one wall. We removed the lath (thanks Andrew!) on Saturday, and put up some drywall (thanks Pete!) and reboxed the outlets on that wall last night. We have about 80% of the wall done – but the edges are going to require a bit more work because we’ll have to demo the connecting walls to find the studs.

If all goes well, we’ll be on our way to finish up the remaining walls in the room soon enough.

Seriously?

We just got a letter in the mail to the previous owner “or current resident” from Maytag / Jenn-Air. It states that if your dishwasher falls within certain serial number ranges:

Liquid rinse-aid can leak from the dispenser of certain Maytag brand and Jenn-Air brand dishwashers and come into contact with the dishwasher’s internal wiring which can short circuit and ignite, posing a fire hazard. Maytag Corporation has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires resulting in product and/or property damage. Four injuries have been reported, including three reports of smoke inhalation and ne serious hand laceration when operating a fire extinguisher to put out a dishwasher fire.

There’s a voluntary recall. Steve’s emptying the dishwasher now.

I’m *SO* glad that DST is done. We’ve been busting our butts working on updating all of the server OS’s, applications, databases, etc., in preparation for DST for… 2 months now? Thank god it’s over. Maybe now I’ll be able to get some sleep or have some form of a life outside of work.

Granted, I didn’t need to work as much as I did. But the UNIX team had it tough because all of their servers’ patches were so out of date that they needed additional resources – and I volunteered to help whenever I could.

Maybe now we can finish the upstairs bedroom walls. We moved in, removed the wallpaper, and then got sucked into work projects and DST remediation for 8+ weeks and haven’t even finished unpacking. At this point we’re thinking of canceling the house warming party and just having a big outdoor bbq party or something in the summer.
